Portuguese Clinical Research Infrastructure Network (PtCRIN) was established between 2011 and 2013, under the scope of the European 7th FP, INFRA-2011-1.1.5. nº 284395 project, untitled European Clinical Research Infrastructures Network - Integrating Activity”replica uhren that has a specific work package dedicated to launch national infrastructures.

PtCRIN started as external consortium of individual-based network of 10 health care units, one non-for-profit clinical research organization and 3 universities with expertise in the clinical research field.

In 2014, Portugal integrated, as founding member the ECRIN/ERIC consortium and PtCRIN was identified by the Portuguese government to be ECRIN national scientific hub and a financial agreement was signed between FCT and ECRIN in 2014 (Portaria n.º 237/2014) and renewed until 2023.

Between 2014-2019 PtCRIN was dedicated to the implementation and development of the concept of academic CTUs/CROs capable of offering external services to the international community (2 CTUs in 2014 – 5 CTUs in 2019) and to the capacitation of national clinical research centres with qualified teams to conduct investigator initiated clinical trials.

PtCRIN was formally integrated in the Portuguese Roadmap of Research Infrastructures in April of 2020, but without specific funds for infrastructure coordination and development.

Currently, PtCRIN is a distributed nationwide infrastructure with 26 members include Health Units, Universities, Research Institutes that host 5 academic CTUs.

PtCRIN Core Team responsible for the management office is currently based at Nova Medical School, in Lisbon.
