As a Clinical Research Center (CRC), CHSJ provides the clinical investigators with the necessary infrastructure and services for the support from the concept idea until the efficient conduct of high quality clinical research to perform clinical trials. CHSJ is the appropriate partner to host clinical studies from phase II to IV.
 
Internal organization for clinical research
The São João Hospital Centre has a structure, the Epidemiologic Center – Research Unit which centralizes all the submission process and provides services as study coordinators/data managers to investigators who request it (approximately 2/3 of all trials in the hospital).
The Research Unit staff organizes the data regarding revenues from commercial sponsors and has records of all specific expenses (direct costs) related with research.
Financial management
The CHSJ is a public Hospital with a centralized financial management in the Hospital Administration, to support the negotiation and submission of the clinical trials contracts in the hospital.
Facilities and Equipment specifically allocated for Clinical Trials
All the facilities for clinical trials are common to care activities and all ensure equipment specifically allocated for clinical trials (when applicable).

No certification for the Clinical trial center, the procedures are supported by an Internal rule Manual approved by the administration board.
